Chasing the California Coast: A Beach-to-Beach Incentive Adventure
/When a Silicon Valley client asked us to design an incentive road trip for a group of young, energetic professionals centered around Southern California's legendary beaches, we knew we had an exciting challenge ahead.
The program had to fit into three action-packed days. Along nearly 300 miles of coastline from Malibu to San Diego, more than a dozen iconic beaches compete for attention, each offering its own unique personality and adventure. Choosing which ones to include—and coordinating the logistics, equipment, transportation, and team-building activities—would be every bit as important as selecting the destinations themselves.
Southern California's coastline is remarkably diverse. From Malibu's dramatic surf breaks to La Jolla's rugged sea cliffs, every beach tells a different story. Some are famous for world-class surfing, others for kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding, hiking, or simply soaking up the laid-back coastal lifestyle. Our goal was to weave these experiences into an incentive program that encouraged teamwork while allowing every participant to pursue their own sense of adventure.
Day 1: Malibu to Santa Monica
We launched the journey at El Matador State Beach in Malibu. Though modest in size, it is one of California's most spectacular stretches of coastline. Towering sea stacks, natural rock arches draped with seaweed, hidden sea caves, and soaring seabirds create a setting that immediately captures the imagination.
Because the beach offers few facilities, we established our own hospitality tent overlooking the Pacific, providing refreshments while introducing the group to the program ahead. This first stop also served as our orientation session, allowing us to learn more about everyone's interests and abilities so we could naturally build team activities around them.
The group quickly divided into two camps. Half were eager surfers, while the others gravitated toward kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing, and other water sports. Armed with that knowledge, we continued down the Pacific Coast Highway to our next destination.
No Southern California beach itinerary would be complete without Santa Monica.
With its iconic pier, lively promenade, beachside cafés, and unmistakable energy, Santa Monica provided the perfect playground for everyone to dive into their activity of choice. Whether catching waves or mastering a paddleboard for the first time, the beach delivered exactly the kind of excitement we had envisioned.
After an exhilarating afternoon, it was time to slow the pace. We had reserved space at The Bungalow Santa Monica, whose relaxed surf-inspired atmosphere made it an ideal setting for the group to unwind, exchange stories, and strengthen new friendships over cocktails and casual conversation.
That evening, everyone checked into Santa Monica Proper Hotel, where California luxury takes on a refreshingly understated character. As the sun dipped into the Pacific, the group gathered on the rooftop at Calabra to enjoy Mediterranean-inspired cuisine while taking in sweeping ocean views—the perfect ending to an unforgettable first day.
Day 2: Into San Diego
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we continued south toward one of California's most treasured coastal gems—La Jolla Cove.
Although small in size, La Jolla Cove possesses extraordinary underwater beauty. Protected as part of a marine reserve and bordered by flourishing kelp forests, its crystal-clear waters are among Southern California's finest for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Outfitted with masks, snorkels, and diving gear, participants entered a vibrant underwater world filled with playful California sea lions, harbor seals, schools of brilliantly colored Garibaldi—the California state fish—and countless other marine species. Above the waterline, sandstone cliffs framed the sapphire-blue cove, creating scenery every bit as impressive as the marine life below.
Lunch awaited us at Duke's La Jolla, named after legendary Hawaiian surfer and Olympic champion Duke Kahanamoku, widely regarded as the father of modern surfing. Overlooking the cove, the restaurant's warm island hospitality and contemporary Hawaiian cuisine provided a welcome opportunity to recharge.
Our afternoon destination was equally memorable.
Coronado Beach is often celebrated not only for its sweeping shoreline but also for its remarkable sand, where tiny flecks of mica sparkle brilliantly in the California sunshine. Reached by crossing the graceful Coronado Bridge, the island is home to elegant neighborhoods, a U.S. Naval installation, and one of America's most iconic beachfront hotels.
The historic Hotel del Coronado, famous for its appearance in the classic film Some Like It Hot, became our home for the evening.
Its location offered something for every member of the group. On the Pacific side, surfers, swimmers, bodyboarders, and bodysurfers embraced the rolling waves, while the calmer waters of San Diego Bay and Glorietta Bay became the playground for kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders, jet skiers, and boaters.
To cap off another adventure-filled day, everyone gathered at Coronado Brewing Company, where award-winning craft beers and casual fare provided the perfect setting to relive the day's highlights.
Day 3: Catalina Island Finale
For our final adventure, we turned north once more toward Catalina Island, located 22 miles off the Southern California coast and accessible only by boat.
A private charter carried the group across the channel to the peaceful village of Two Harbors on the island's western shore. Here, waiting kayaks became the gateway to exploring secluded beaches, hidden coves, and pristine stretches of coastline inaccessible by road.
Yet the grand finale still awaited.
Mounted on horseback, the group followed Catalina's historic trails through rugged hillsides to breathtaking overlooks that revealed panoramic views of the Pacific and the island's untouched coastline. It was a fitting conclusion—combining exploration, adventure, and spectacular scenery into one unforgettable experience.
As evening approached, we returned to Los Angeles, where the group's charter flight awaited for the journey home to San Jose.
Three days. Five extraordinary beaches. Countless shared experiences.
More than just a road trip, the program became a celebration of Southern California's remarkable coastline—a journey where adventure, collaboration, and discovery came together to create memories that would long outlast the waves.
